Dental Contouring
Improve The Size or Shape of The Teeth

Dental contouring — also known as enameloplasty or tooth reshaping — is a dental procedure to change the size or shape of the teeth. The procedure involves using handpieces to reshape some of the enamel – the hard shell on the exterior of the teeth.

It’s important to note that in order to have dental contouring, your teeth must already be healthy with strong enamel. Dr. Sarah Latterell will not be able to shave down the enamel if there isn’t already enough there.

What Are The Benefits of Dental Contouring?

Dental contouring is a quick, easy, and cost-effective procedure. It generally takes 1 hour or less to complete. Dental contouring is best for non-invasive, minor issues such as:

  • Improving the overall appearance of the teeth
  • Changing the size and shape of the teeth
  • Chipped, cracked, crooked, or misaligned teeth
  • Issues caused by teeth grinding (bruxism)

What to Expect At Your Appointment

The dental contouring procedure involves removing some of the enamel from the teeth to change their shape and size. Here’s what to expect at your dental contouring appointment:

1. Assessment

At your first appointment, Dr. Sarah will examine the teeth, take X-rays and assess the issues that you’d like to have fixed. It’s important for Dr. Sarah to assess the health of the teeth and mouth prior to reshaping. If there is not enough enamel, she may recommend veneers instead.

2. Teeth Marking

Next, Dr. Sarah will mark the teeth to know where she will sculpt the teeth. This will ensure she shapes the teeth exactly how you like them. She can also make adjustments as she begins the process.

3. Contouring and Shaping

Finally, the enamel is shaved down and reshaped with a disc or handpiece to sculpt the tooth to its desired shape. If some teeth are too long, they will be filed down. Dr. Sarah will polish the teeth afterward to ensure a smooth finish.
