Fluoride Treatment:

Keep Your Teeth Strong & Healthy

Fluoride treatment is an effective method to keep your teeth strong and healthy. When consuming certain products such as sugary foods and acidic beverages, bacteria and plaque can build up in the mouth and destroy the tooth’s enamel. Fluoride helps strengthen your enamel by remineralizing the surface and making it more resistant to decay.

While fluoride is added to toothpaste to prevent cavities, it is also recommended that you receive a dental fluoride treatment at least once a year if you are at a higher risk for cavities. Dr. Sarah and your hygienist can perform a risk assessment and provide a fluoride treatment at your regular check-up.

Who Can Benefit from a Fluoride Treatment?

Anyone with a higher risk for cavities can benefit from a fluoride treatment, such as those with:

  • Dry mouth conditions
  • Gum recession
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Multiple teeth with previous fillings or crowns
  • Diet consisting of higher amounts of acids, sugars, or processed foods
  • Tobacco use
  • Orthodontic or other removable appliances
  • History of cavities

Fluoride is effective in preventing cavities, and sometimes even reversing early cavities, in both baby teeth and permanent teeth. Fluoride treatments can also reduce tooth sensitivity.

What Happens During A Fluoride Treatment Appointment?

Dr. Sarah and her team will first provide a professional teeth cleaning and exam at your appointment.

Next, a soft brush is used to apply the fluoride to the teeth in the form of a varnish. The procedure only takes a few minutes.

To be effective, hot liquids and sticky foods should be avoided for a few hours following the fluoride treatment.
